Featured Offerings

In this section I display the Featured Drake Custom models that I have designed and built in the past.  These models are some of my favorite designs, are styles that I build on a regular basis, and have a more standard pricing.  I have made the tooling and templates to recreate these designs to what I feel are optimal specs.  I am willing to alter any of my models (to a certain degree) to suit a player’s needs.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions about such a build.  These are custom builds, built by me in my shop, but they utilize a more standardized design and production process that costs less and saves time.  I stock materials and several of the primary components for these models.

The Hornets and Crickets

Late in 2016 I decided to push forward with a project that I have been thinking about for many years.  I have always wanted to have a line of semi-hollow basses that are light in weight and well balanced.  I wanted the basses to be able to be ordered in any scale from 30-34 inches and still only be 42.5 inches in length.  I made the Cricket design to have access to the higher frets that regular semi-hollow basses lack, a full size neck, even on the shorter scaled versions.  Scale length, fret board radius, hardware color, inlay, top wood, sound hole shape, some electronics options, and fret wire choice can all be chosen by the customer.  In 2018, I introduced a two horn version called the Hornet bass.  Both styles have the same options available.

This bass is one of the first of the Cricket basses.  The bass pictured is of a 32 inch scale with 24 frets.  This model is available with wood or acetate binding, or rounded edges.  Average weight of these basses, is around 7 pounds or less.  The electronics in this example bass, include dual Tonestyler modules rather than the standard volume, volume, tone pot arrangement.  More details at https://www.drakecustombass.com/gallery/cricket-bass-0517/

For those who want a bit more customization to their Cricket model bass, can edit the features to taste.  This example is of a carved top version.  All models can be made with a carved top.  My modern style peghead is also shown here as an option.  Example bass is a 33 inch scale.  More details on this particular bass, please see here at https://www.drakecustombass.com/gallery/ct-cricket-bass-0717/

Not everyone wants a single cut style bass, so in 2018, I added the double horn version to the line.  This Hornet model example, shows a standard D style through body only bridge and diamond inlays.  The sound hole shown is a customer request and is one of the features that can be altered to suit your taste.  https://www.drakecustombass.com/gallery/noahs-hornet/

This particular example is a standard Hornet bass.  Essentially no modification to the standard spec, except the A style bridge, which is an option available on all Cricket or Hornet basses.  See below for a list of standard options.  Custom options also available.  Additional information at https://www.drakecustombass.com/gallery/hornet-bass/

BG Model 5 and 6

My featured 5 and 6 string semi hollow design.  This is a design from late in 2016.  In the last few years I have been asked repeatedly to come up with a lightweight semi-hollow bass that is easy to play and well balanced on strap or lap.  When asked in 2016 if I would submit a bass to Bass Gear magazine, I felt that this was the motivation I needed to see this design through.  The BG bass is a result of many months of planning and testing.  I am very proud of this design.

This example of the BG 5 bass, shows a few of the available options such as wood pickup covers and a Florentine style lower horn.  This bass can be made in scales 33-35″ with 4, 5, or 6 strings.  Read more details about this bass at https://www.drakecustombass.com/gallery/bg-5-string-bass/

This is an example of a customized BG model bass.  The customer opted for wood binding with abalone shell trimmings around the perimeter.  Binding options are available, as well as rounded edges and carved tops, for additional costs.  This example shows a multi-piece laminated neck.  Many pickup options available.   https://www.drakecustombass.com/gallery/bg5-052018/

Model 7 (M7)

BG MK7 021

This is one of my all time favorite models.  I love everything about the look, feel, and balance of this bass model.  I have built many in the 4 string configuration as well as several in 5 and 6 string configurations.  This design is very adaptable and very comfortable to play.  Well balanced both strap and lap.  The treble side horn holds the bass in the perfect playing position while seated.  There are so many options available, for this model, to suit about any need or application.  I can use almost any type of pickups and the electronics cavity is spacious enough to carry on board equipment.
